Abstract

A large proportion of urban residents in Nigerian cities live in slums but little attempt has been made to map these slums. This study adopted remote sensing, geographic information and social surveys to map and characterize slums in the study area. Specific objective of the research was to assess the level of deterioration in the study area. The study engaged a Google Earth georeferenced 2013 imagery to extract  spatial data from the study area. ArcGIS 9.3 was utilized to generate geographic locations for buildings that were sampled. Responses from the administered questionnaire were recorded based on slum
indicators for Slum Severity Index (SSI). Calculations and aggregations were performed to evolve index for each of the SSI indicators. The Inverse Distance Weighted Interpolation was utilized to determine respective SSI indicator index values for the totality of the area using the sample point index value. The outputs for the SSI indicators were then coalesced together using the Map Algebra Tool in ArcGIS 9.3 to show slum severity in the study area. Results showed that the level of slum severity in this area generally ranges from moderate to low. It was further observed that the income profile of the households largely amplified the slum conditions in the area. The study concluded that there is a strong relationship between urban slum development and urban poverty in the study area. Therefore, the research canvases that slum policies should be integrated with urban poverty reduction policies rather than addressing only the physical dimension of slums.
